Thomas M. Tolen, LC, is the principal of TMT Associates. Mr. Tolen is a recognized expert in sustainable and green building design. He has been involved in lighting consultation and energy analysis for more than 20 years. Mr. Tolen has authored or coauthored numerous lighting publications, including the Advanced Lighting Guidelines, Lighting Fundamentals Handbook, and the lighting portions of the California Guidelines for High Performance Schools. He has received both Sectional and Regional International Illumination Design Awards for excellence in lighting design. Mr. Tolen is the immediate past Regional Vice President for the South Pacific Coast Region of the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IESNA). He also served as President, Education Chair and Program Chair of IESNA's Golden Gate Section. He is Lighting Certified (LC) by the National Council on Qualifications for the Lighting Professions (NCQLP) and was a member of NCQLP’s Test Committee. Mr. Tolen is also a member of the International Association of Lighting Designers.

Mr. Tolen formed the lighting design and consulting firm TMT Associates in 1999. TMT Associates specializes in energy-efficient architectural lighting design, lighting energy efficiency consulting, and lighting education. A University of California, Irvine graduate in psychology, Mr. Tolen began his lighting career in 1984 while in graduate school. He practiced residential and light commercial lighting design until 1992, when he joined the energy consulting firm of Eley Associates to serve as the in-house lighting expert. From 1996 until 1999, he worked as a Senior Designer for AfterImage/Design +, where he again served as the resident expert on lighting efficiency issues.

As an active member of IESNA’s Energy Management and Sustainable Lighting Committees, Mr. Tolen is a recognized expert in the field of lighting energy efficiency. He regularly advises the California Energy Commission on Title 24 and other lighting matters. In addition to numerous architectural firms and end users, his clients have included several utilities, including Pacific Gas & Electric Company, Sacramento Municipal Utility District, Southern California Edison, and Enron Energy Services. He is a popular speaker on lighting and energy efficiency matters and he has been a feature speaker to prominent groups such as PG&E, SMUD, CABEC, American Institute of Architects, IEEE, IESNA, and others.
